As a person growing up in Uruapan (with still strong familial ties to this city in Mexico), I have noticed how violence (a product of organized crime and the government) becomes embedded into our personas. It affects our everyday activities and determines our identities and memories even beyond the geographical space of the city. afrontaciones => (f.) copings is an auto-ethnographic and artistic project centred on the practice of creating “testimonies” and collective story-sharing through the complex layers of inhabiting a city crossed by violence.
This project is based on five audio-video testimonies shared by individuals from my hometown and a self-testimony. These personal narratives serve as the foundation for exploring memory, identity, and connection. The testimonies are woven into a tapestry of digital and virtual materials, each contributing to the project’s immersive experience. These materials include audio versions of each testimonial, mixed-media collages (mixing techniques such as photo-thermo printings, stamping, collage, and other handprinting techniques), typed testimonies, a tape-recorded self-testimony, several printings on acetate sheets, recorded videos from my hometown, found footage of disappearance in Mexico, and video sections of each of the testimonials.
In the installation space, I blend digital and physical formats. My canvas is TransMit, a self-design programming language for live video manipulation. I manipulate the digital realm through live coding practices and electronic literature, shaping and reshaping the project’s materialities. To visualize the syntax of TransMit, I’ve crafted a set of hand-made fonts. Each character embodies the project’s spirit, bridging the gap between code and expression. In this convergence of the tangible and the virtual, I invite viewers to explore the interplay of memory, technology, and storytelling. The collision of physical and virtual realms within this setup creates a space where narratives resonate.
